Pra Soave Classico 2006

Brothers Sergio and Graziano Prà run this 25ha estate which is situated in the Soave Classico DOC near the village of Monteforte d’Alpone. The soils around these parts are volcanic with scattered marine fossil and the Gargenega which makes its way into this Soave are trellised using the age-old pergola system…..no oak used here also….all stainless steel.

It would be nice to see Pra embrace alternative closures for this wine but that would mean losing the right to use ‘Classico’ on the label….in Europe I could see this being a problem but in the New World??….I don’t think so…Nicholas Belfrage MW tell’s me he is having a chat to them about the possibility of changing the closure…we’ll see how he goes.

Light pale straw in colour the Pra Soave shows aromas of pear, lemon and grapefruit with hints of hay, white flowers, soft spice, river stone and a suggestion of some creamy, leesy characters.

In the mouth the wine has a pleasing weight and texture with a crisp, striking line. Succulant pear, white peach and grapefruit characters are wrapped in a steely, minerally sheath with hints of marzipan, nougat, spice and light white flower wafts. There is some mid-palate creaminess going on here too but the zippy, mineral-like acidity snaps it into a line that flows nicely to a balanced, persistant finish. Nice drinking!
